A Spring-Cleaning Guide for Your Laundry and Linens
February 11, 2020
Spring cleaning is a perfect way to herald the coming of a new season. It’s both symbolic of removing the debris of last year and practical because it puts your house in order after being cooped up all winter. A thorough spring cleaning is a massive undertaking, and you could put your cleaning activities in a daily schedule.
Aside from washing, scrubbing, and home maintenance, don’t forget to add this checklist of items you should wash to make sure every aspect of your home is fresh and clean for spring.
- Bedclothes
Because your comfy blankets, soft throws, and snug bedsheets have kept you warm through the cold nights, they’ll need to be washed to remove the accumulation of skin cells and other particles in them. Strip all of your bedclothes, from pillowcases to comforters, and proceed to launder them.
Time allotment: If you have a lot of bedrooms, allot a whole day to this task. If you live in a single bedroom home, this should take no longer than a couple of hours at most.
- Draperies
Curtains and drapes keep your home warm by blocking drafts and containing the heat, but they’ll still be musty after the snow melts. Take down and wash all your heavy winter curtains and replace them with light and airy ones that are perfect for letting in the fresh spring sunlight.
Time allotment: Because of their bulk, washing all of your curtains can take a better part of the day.
- Winter Wear
With the snows and chill winds gone, it’s time to pack away all of your sweaters, parkas, and scarves. But before you put them back in your closet, be sure to give them a thorough laundering or take them to a professional laundromat near you. Wash them according to instructions to avoid damaging knitwear and similar items.
Time allotment: Depends on how much winter wear you have, but at most about half a day. Bulkier items like parkas may need more time.
- Clothing Donations
Just as you’re putting your winter clothes back in, spring cleaning is a perfect time to take some things out. If you have excess clothes, consider donating them to a charity or nearby thrift store. Or you can give them to friends and family who like your sense of style. Before you do, wash away the mustiness with a washing machine.
Time allotment: This also depends on how much clothing you’re planning on removing from your closet. Allot your morning to washing, and a day for packing them for shipment or delivery.
- Tablecloths and Napkins
The holiday season is a time of feasts and celebrations, and at least some of them require your best tablecloths and similar finery. Just like your winter wear, a good tumble through a washing machine is ideal to keep them fresh and clean for the next time you use them.
Time allotment: A couple of hours at most is enough for this task.
Your clothes, bedsheets, and fabrics take care of you through winter, fending off the chill and keeping you warm and snug through cold nights. Taking care of them will preserve them and ensure they’re fresh for when the snow comes again. So, give them a good wash or take them to a laundromat you trust while the sun still shines.
